Which variety of Poppy produces edible seeds?
Looking around on the net, most sources claim that Papaver Somniferum (The Opium/Bread Seed Poppy) is the only poppy plant that produces seeds that are appropriate for use in baking. However, a places few extend this characteristic to include Papaver Orientale (The Oriental Poppy) also.
I’d like one specific cultivar from each (White:Peshawar/Persian and Red: Beauty Of Livermere) but am unsure if I’ll be able to safely cook with the red ones.
The annual plant Papaver somniferum is the source for the seeds used in baked goods.
I would guess that the seeds of the perennial poppy, Papaver orientale, are not poisonous but are useless for culinary use.
