Water Hyacinth Plants
word problem help?

assume a water hyacinth plant covers one square meter (m^2) of surface area of water. assume that each water hyacinth reproduces every 3 months. you have a pond that is 11.6m by 11m in area, whic contains 4 water hyacinths plants. determine how long (months) it will take to fill one half and then the whole pond with water hyacinth.

i am having trouble figuring this out..i came up with the answer of 180 months but my teacher told me that the answer i have is not right..so i am confused of how to go about doing this problem. please help.

assume that the pond is a rectangle (not stated), but by the dimensions, it appears to be one.

Area then is 11.6*11 = 127.6sq m

you have 4 hyacinth and each covers 1 sq m, so initially, 4 sq meters are covered. This doubles each 3 months, so

3 months 8
6 months 16
9 months 32
12 months 64 this is larger than 1/2 area of pond
15 months 128 this is now larger than the area of the pond

hope this helps – M

I have a pink hyacinth plant and i was wondering if it requires any special treatment or anything?

anything special from sun to dark
lots of water or little
artificial light or sunlight or doesnt matter which
etc.
thanks.

I have a bunch of them every year. I always just place them in a window (not in one with direct sunlight all day long though), and water it about the same as my other plants. I have never had any problems with them. I also have some in my yard, and they don’t really seem to require any attention at all.
